Escalation in the Middle East? – Israel’s security in a region in upheaval

Lecture and discussion (in German) with Dr. Dan Schueftan (Israel) about the current developments in the Middle East

Venue
: Haus der Region, Hildesheimer Straße20, 30169Hannover

Time
: Saturday, June 23, 6:00 pm

Topic of the evening will be Israel’s security in turbulent times. The upheavals in the Arab world allow hopes for the spreading of democracy and freedom in the region, but right now radical Islamist and anti-Israeli forces are the ones who profit from instability and elections. In Egypt, incitement against Israel was used by many parties and candidates for their election campaigns, and the peace treaty with Israel has been openly challenged. The security situation at the Israeli-Egyptian border is already very tense, and Israel started with the erection of extended border installations. The civil war in Syria contains additional threats for Israel, including Assad’s chemical weapons arsenal and Islamist forces among the rebels. The Syrian conflict increasingly affects Lebanon. The Iran supported Hezbollah tightens its control over the country, and it now has many more missiles than before the last Lebanon war in 2006. Above all looms the existential threat by the Iranian nuclear weapons program, which until now could not be stopped by sanctions or diplomacy. A failure of diplomacy would confront Israel with the highly risky decision over a preventive strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

We cordially invite you to discuss these developments with one of the internationally most renowned Israeli security experts!

Dr. Dan Schueftan is the Director of the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa. For the last three decades, he has been a consultant to the Israeli and other governments. He regularly appears in international media. In his influential books, he among others called for the unilateral Israeli disengagement from Gaza.
