Escalation in the Middle East? Israel in a region in upheaval

Dr. Dan Schueftan (Israel) talks with Prof. Lars Rensmann about Israel and the current developments in the Middle East.

Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, 7.00 pm

Robert-Koch-Saal, Dorotheenstr. 96, 10117 Berlin.

The „Arab Spring“, welcomed with a lot of hope early this year, has made way for a far darker picture. Instead of freedom and democracy, Islamist forces are likely to prevail. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is heading toward a new escalation. The PA unwaveringly strives for international recognition as a state, while in Gaza the Islamic Jihad competes with Hamas. Finally, the Islamic Republic of Iran is pushing forward its nuclear program, and there are signs for a military strike against Iran. We cordially invite you to discuss these developments with one of the internationally most renowned Israeli security experts!

Dr. Dan Schueftan is the Director of the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa. For the last three decades, he has been a consultant to the Israeli and other governments. He regularly appears in international media. In his influential books, he among others called for the unilateral Israeli disengagement from Gaza.

Moderation: Dr. Lars Rensmann, DAAD Professor at the University of Michigan and Permanent Fellow at the Moses Mendelssohn Zentrum. His recent publications include Politics and Resentment: Antisemitism and Counter-Cosmopolitanism in the European Union (2011, with Julius H. Schoeps).
