For more than 80 years, rulers and media in the Arab world have stoked hatred of Jews, denied the Holocaust and advocated the elimination of Israel. Last month, however, a comprehensive peace agreement surprisingly came about between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. For the first time, Arab states confidently and proudly declared their alliance with Israel. Is this a "historic breakthrough" that opens up the possibility of a new Middle East, as some claim? Or do we still have, as others object, “hardly any reason for hope in the Middle East”, since there could be no peace for Israel and Palestine without the “two-state solution”?
The speaker will report on the content of the new agreement and the associated changes in the Middle East. He will look at the angry responses provoked by the peace treaty in Tehran, Ankara and Ramallah, and critically examine the reactions of Germany and the EU.
Dr. Matthias Küntzel, political scientist and historian from Hamburg, has been dealing with the history and present of anti-Semitism in the Middle East in books and articles for 20 years. His most recent book “Nazis and the Middle East. How Islamic anti-Semitism came about ”was published by Hentrich & Hentrich at the end of 2019.
